Thinking about a new pool deck or maybe just giving your old one some TLC? Here in Boise, our seasons really call the shots on when you can get certain work done and, just as important, how you need to protect your investment. It's not simply about throwing down some wood or composite; it's about smart planning, right?
When to Schedule Your Boise Pool Deck Project
This is probably the biggest question I get asked. People see that gorgeous summer weather and think, "Now's the time!" And sure, we can build then, but it's not always the best idea. Here's the lowdown:
- Spring (April-May): This is prime time to get on our schedule. The ground's thawed out, the weather's usually pretty cooperative, and we can get your project started — and often finished — before the swimming season really kicks off. You'll be ready to splash by June, no problem. Plus, if you're doing concrete work, those moderate temperatures are absolutely perfect for curing.
- Summer (June-August): We're definitely busy, but we can still build. The downside? You might lose a few weeks of swimming while we're working. Also, that intense heat can be tough on our crews and some materials, requiring more careful handling, especially with certain sealants or stains that really don't like direct, scorching sun during application.
- Fall (September-October): Another great window, especially if you want to be all set for next year. The temperatures are cooling down, which is good for many materials, and our schedule often opens up a bit. It’s a smart move to get it done now so you’re not scrambling around in the spring.
- Winter (November-March): Generally speaking, we just don't build new decks in the dead of winter here in Boise. Frozen ground, snow, and ice make it impractical, and often impossible, to pour concrete or properly install footings. What's more, many finishes and adhesives just won't cure correctly in freezing temperatures. We might handle small repairs or planning during this time, but major construction? That waits for spring.
How Weather Affects Pool Deck Work
Our Boise weather, especially those wild temperature swings we get, plays a huge role. For example, if we're pouring concrete for a new pool deck, we need consistent temperatures — not too hot, not too cold — for it to cure correctly. Too hot, and it dries too fast, which can lead to cracks. Too cold, and it won't gain strength properly. Rain is also a big factor; we can't pour concrete or apply most stains or sealants in the rain. Even high humidity can mess with drying times, believe it or not.
For wood or composite decks, extreme heat can make some materials expand more than usual, which we always account for in our spacing. Wind can also be a real pain, blowing dust and debris onto wet finishes. We're always checking the forecast, sometimes daily, to make sure conditions are just right for each stage of your project.
Protecting Your Pool Deck Year-Round
You've put good money into your pool deck, so naturally, you want it to last. Here's how to keep it looking great and performing well through all four Boise seasons:
- Clean Regularly: Don't let leaves, dirt, or debris just sit on your deck, especially under our mature shade trees in areas like the North End. They trap moisture and can lead to staining, mold, or even rot. A simple sweep or hose-down really does wonders.
- Seal or Stain (Wood Decks): For wood decks, this is non-negotiable. Our dry summers and wet, snowy winters are brutal. Reapply a good quality sealant or stain every 1-3 years, depending on the product and how much sun it gets. This protects against UV damage, moisture, and rot.
- Check for Damage: After winter, especially, give your deck a good once-over for loose boards, nails popping up, or any signs of rot or insect damage. Catching these early saves you bigger headaches down the road.
- Winter Prep: If you're covering your pool, make sure your deck is clean and dry before winter hits. Remove any potted plants or heavy items that could trap moisture or cause uneven weathering. While composite decks are pretty low maintenance, even they benefit from a good cleaning before the snow flies.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Be careful with pool chemicals. Spills can stain or damage your deck surface. Clean them up immediately, okay?
- Consider a Cover: Not just for the pool, but for the deck itself if you have sensitive materials or just want extra protection during heavy snowfalls.
